How to Preserve the Precious Silver Rings

The silver rings are among the basic accessories which match almost every outfit due to the neutral color and every silver ornament looks attractive when it is shiny and clean. Silver is prone to corrosion that tarnishes the silver due to the oxidation. So ensure the presence of the protective layer when you buy a new silver ring.

Some facts to consider for preserving your silver rings-

  • Do not wear your silver rings while gardening, swimming or during any washing activities.
  • Always apply the makeup before you wear your silver rings that can give the consistent shine to the rings for a longer time because some chemicals in the cosmetics increase the corrosion of the silver metal.
  • Instead of keeping the silver rings in the boxes for a long time, they should be worn often. The contact of the silver rings with the oil of the skin prevents the coating of the silver rings and that ultimately prevents tarnishing which happens due to the reaction of silver metal with sulfur which is mixed in air.
  • Always clean your silver ring with a soft cloth that will not put scratches on the surface of a ring.
  • Gentle strokes should be made in a single direction and avoid the circular ones that can decrease the shine of the silver rings. Handle lightly as the harsh hands can loosen the gemstones in the silver rings. For the areas of the ring that are not accessible by the cloth can be cleaned by using a soft brush specially made for this purpose.
  • Avoid the use of harsh chemicals to clean the silver rings. While for the purpose of just removing the finger prints that can be cleaned using the solution of light detergent in warm water.
  • You can even prepare a solution at home to clean the silver rings. Few things needed for this are baking soda, some hot water and a silver foil. Place the silver foil in a vessel and keep your silver rings in that vessel. Take another vessel and mix some baking soda in hot water. Then pour this solution on rings and after sometime you see the shine back on the rings. Remember to store the rings only after they are dried properly.
  • Always store the silver rings either in the air tight bag to prevent them from moisture or you can also keep them in a velvet jewellery box. The strips of anti-tarnishing material are available in the market that can be put in the boxes to keep the silver rings safe. These strips need to be changed after every six months. Try to keep silver rings separate from other ornaments so the rings do not have scratches on them.

If the above things are kept in mind then you can preserve your silver rings for years and hence you can pass them from one generation to another.
